Exclamatory Sentences (Rules)

  • The sentences which carry the sense of sudden joy, sorrow, wonder, disappointment etc.   are called Exclamatory Sentence, Indirect Speech is introduced by some verb expressing exclamation or wish as pray, cry, exclaim, bless, wish, applaud , confess, bid etc.

(II)  Connective that is used.

(III) After the Reporting Verb , we use such expressions as joyfully , with sorrow, with joy in astonishment , etc. according to the sense.

(IV)            Exclamatory Sentence is changed into Assertive Sentence.

(V) The Rules for change of Tense and Pronoun are the Indirect Speech by adding appropriate Subject and Verb.

Examples:

Direct: He said, Alas ! I am ruined.

Indirect: He cried with griet that he was ruined.

Direct: he said, May God pardon the sinner.

Indirect: He prayed that God might pardon the sinner.

Direct: Looking at his broken doll, the child said, Oh ! it is my doll.

Indirect: Looking at his broken doll, the child cried out sorrowfully that it was his  doll.

Direct: He said, Alas ! I am undone.

Indirect: He exclaimed with grief that he was undone.

Direct: He said, Hurrah ! my friend has come.

Indirect: He exclaimed with delight that his friend had come.

Direct: He said, Bravo ! You have done well.

Indirect: He applauded him, saying that he had done well.
