Meaning of Achievement Tests

The successes or achievements of a person in a specific field can be measured using achievement tests. At schools, achievement tests are used in order to examine the learning acquired by students in different subjects, which tells what teaching experiences the students have achieved. Types of Achievement Tests

Achievement tests are of two types:

1. Standardized tests.

The teacher-made non-formal tests are of the following three

2. Oral.

3. Practical.

Written tests are of two types:

1. Essay-type tests

2. Objective-type tests.

Standardized Vs. Non-formal Teacher-made Tests

As is evident from their names, non-formal teacher-made tests are made by teachers. The teachers use these tests to examine their students. As has been told above, these tests can be oral, written, or practical. Their chief characteristics are as follows:

(i) Their practice field is limited.

(ii) The teachers make them according to their respective needs.

(iii) Teacher-made non-formal tests are easier than standardized tests. It is because of the fact that the material, organization, marking, and analysis of standardized tests are specified for a specific age group and specific level of education; while a teacher is directly related to the teacher-made tests. (iv) By teacher-made tests the students can be tested according to the specific objectives and specific circumstances of the class.

Teacher-made tests can be of three types–oral, written, or practical.

1. Oral and Practical Tests. The significance of oral and practical tests is as follows:

(ii) These tests are complementary to the written tests.

Construction of an Achievement Test in Social Science

Construction of achievement tests is a difficult task, and not an easy one. For it, sufficient planning is needed. This task can be well accomplished if the following aspects are paid attention to:

2. To Cover Syllabus. The material specified for the test should be based on the syllabus directly that the teacher has taught. The following points should be adhered to in this relation:

(i) The teacher should prepare a format of the experiences given to the students.

It would be proper for the test paper to have the following form:

(i) The test paper should be neither too hard nor too easy.

(ii) The teacher should pay attention to its difficulty.

(iii) The suitable method for testing the difficulty level of a test paper is to test the paper on some students.

(iv) The results of that test should be analyzed on the basis of the passing percentage of students in each question.

(v) The percentage of passing students shows that the question is easy.

(vi) The teacher should determine the difficulty level of the questions on the basis of this analysis.

8. To Prepare Score Key. In order to bring objectivity to marking, a scoring key should be specified in advance. The scoring method should be specified not only for objective-type questions but also for essay-type and short-answer-type questions.
