The term gifted’ and ‘talented’ are used interchangeably. The gifted child shows his excellence in performing some special tasks their behaviour in the classroom is above average or very high. Psychologists have identified gifted children on the basis of IQ. JP Guilford in his theory of ‘Structure of Intellect’ has given 120 abilities. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Gifted Children)

Meaning and Definition of Gifted Children
The term ‘giftedness’ has been defined by psychologists in various ways. They have stated the term with help of intelligent quotient, social potentialities or social efficiency and also statistically. Some of the important definitions of ‘giftedness’ have been stated in the following paras-
According to WE. Kolesnik: “The term gifted has been applied to every child who, in his group, is superior in some ability which may make him an outstanding contribution to the welfare and quality living in our society”
According to Prem Pasricha: “The gifted child is the one who exhibits up priority in intelligence or the one who is in possession of special abilities of high order in the field which are not necessarily associated with high intelligent quotient”.
According to Havighurst: “The talented or gifted child is one who shows constantly remarkable performance or outstanding behaviour in any worthwhile endeavour”. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Gifted Children)

According to Simption and Lucking: “The gifted children are those who possess a superior central nervous system characterized by the potential to perform tasks requiring a comparatively high degree of intellectual obstruction of the creative imagination of both, are called the gifted child”. Characteristics of Gifted Children
In the above definitions of ‘giftedness’, psychologists have enumerated the following general characteristics:
- Giftedness is the upper extreme of the normal distribution of any trait e.g. social, mental and aptitude.
- A gifted child is one who shows remarkable and outstanding performance in any worthwhile task.
- He possesses a superior central nervous system high degree of intellectual, creativity and imagination.
- A gifted child makes an outstanding contribution to the welfare, quality of living and our society.
- The gifted child possesses a high ideational level in productive and evaluative thinking.
- He is a problem solver, innovator and evaluator of cultural and educational experiences.
These characteristics may be classified into the following three categories:- 1. intellectual characteristics, 2. personality characteristics. and 3. Characteristics. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Gifted Children)
(a) Positive Characteristics of Gifted Children
They possess positive qualities some are as follows:
(1). Intellectual Characteristics: The following are intellectual characteristics:
- The gifted children have, a better ability to organize, analyse, memorise, synthesize reason out things,
- Have extensive rapidity in learning and comprehension.
- Quick and clear self-expressions,
- Good in abstract thinking and good insight.
- Good imagination power-use original ideas
- Better understanding and comprehensive power
- Keen and accurate observation power-can note minute details,
- Rich Vocabulary,
- Good common sense and good general knowledge,
- Generally better in science and Arithmetic,
- Possess a broad span of attention,
- May be good in on or moral than specific ability like music, art, science etc.,
- Varied and wide interests, and
- I.Q. above 125 (according to Davidson and Goddard), 130 + (according to Hollingworth), and 140 + (according to Terman).
(2) Personality Characteristics: The following are specific personality characteristics of gifted children:
- Have better ability to adjust, organize, analyse and synthesise things,
- Sometimes show emotional-instability also,
- Better planning capacity,
- Have lack of recognition of their potentialities,
- Feel bordem in the classroom,
- May participate actively in discussion,
- More found of questioning,
- It May be popular,
- General superior personality,
- Superior character,
- More humourous, cheerful and generous,
- Have friends of higher age and of class,
- Sincere and dutiful,
- High achievers in class,
- Possesses high character, and
- Possesses good physical health.
(3) Social Characteristics: The following are the specific social characteristics of children:
- They are socially well mature,
- They are popular in his group,
- They are responsible for performing their duties or assigned work,
- They have quality leadership.
- They have the capacity to be socially useful and intermingle with others,
- They are humour and honest or great trustworthy,
- They are democratic and less autocratic, and
- They possess high moral qualities.
(b) Negative Characteristics of Gifted Children
They possess some negative qualities which are as follows:
- They may be restless, inattentive and disturbing.
- They may be coned isolated and neglected if their potential is not paid due attention.
- They become lazy if they find the school curriculum unchallenging to them, and
- They do not take interest in school academic activities.
- They may be indifferent to class work when not interested.
- They may become outspoken, and have sensitive temperaments.
- They show egoistic and jealous behaviour,
- They are generally careless and poor in spelling and handwriting, and
- They may not like the school curriculum which is normal
The Identification of Gifted Children
The identification of gifted children had been discussed in two aspects :
- Need for Identification of Gifted Children
- Basis of identifying gifted children.
1. Need for Identification of Gifted Children
Sammual A Krik has righty stated that several gifted children remain undeveloped and their potentialities’ are not properly utilized by society because they have not been identified in schools. There is no provision for them for special education.

The curriculum has been designed in view of the needs of average students. In a democracy, gifted children are assets to the nation as well as to society. There is a need to identify such children. Two methods are commonly used-
- The informal method or observation method is used by teachers and parents, and
- The formal or Testing method is used by teachers guides and counsellors. The intelligence tests are employed for this purpose.
2. Basis of Identifying Gifted Children
The following qualities and behaviours are the basis for identifying gifted children-A gifted child-
- Learners rapidly and easily
- Uses a lot of common sense and practical knowledge meaning easily
- Thinks clearly and recognizes complex relationships and comprehends, meaning easily
- Good memory makes less use of rate drill, better under
- Better general knowledge
- Good in language
- Can read books that are one-two year in advance of the rest of the class
- Performs difficult mental tasks
- Has more curiosity
- Possesses a wide range of interests
- Are a keen observer and good vocabulary
- Is quick In reaction and language proficiency
- Uses original but unusual methods or ideas
- Has high intelligence
- Has better concentration and attention
- Interest in and liking books.
3. The procedure of Identifying Gifted Children
The formal method is most appropriate for identifying such children. The commonly used procedures are as follows-
- By administering intelligence tests may be verbal, nonverbal and performance.
- By administering, achievement, tests, and scholastic tests.
- By observing cumulative and academic records.
- By collecting observations and opinions of teachers parents, friends and neighbours.
- By the participation in co-curricular activities of schools and social functions.
Problems of Gifted Children
The gifted children have their own problems which are related to their adjustment in different areas-
- The problem of adjustment in family
- Adjustment in school
- Adjustment in society
- Mental adjustment
- Teaching methods and unsuitable curriculum
- In case their giftedness is not recognized they may become perverted intelligent. They may show hostile attitudes and feel rejected unwanted and isolated. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Gifted Children)
They may develop an inferiority complex and Insecurity.
- If the classroom work is easy for them they may not have the Interest, and therefore -may feel boredom in class. They may become truant or may use daydreaming or fantasy for the work of a higher lever.
