Meaning and Definition of Mental Hygiene

Mental hygiene is meant the science of mental health. As physiology is the science of taking preventing measures and treatment of the physical structure, functions of different body organs, methods of keeping the body healthy, remedies to unhealth,y and treatment of any bodily defect; in the same manner, mental hygiene is the science of taking measures of keeping the form of the mind, it’s the different forms as unconscious, sub-conscious, conscious and super-conscious, to sitting prevent mental defects and to treat the mind from any types of defects. In sum total, this is the science of saving people from mental illnesses, so it is also called mental health science.

As far as keeping the mind healthy is concerned, it had been developed in our country India thousands of years ago. Aims function, Utility, and Improtantance of Mental Hygiene

Indian ‘yoga’ is sublime from of mental hygiene, its chief function or aim is to eliminate the frivolousness of the mind and to raise it above pleasure and pain. In western countries, the function or aim of mental hygiene is to free an individual from psychoses and enable him to adjust in that the individual and the society, both become happy.

According to Shaifer, the aim of mental hygiene is to assist an individual in leading become happier and more coordinated life.

Boring, Langfield and Weld have expressed this aim in a clearer manner. According to them the aim of mental hygiene is to eliminate the anxieties and maladjustments of individuals and provide them more satisfactory and productive life.

The functions of mental hygiene that it performs for keeping the people mentally healthy and to make the whole society happy, can be divided into three classes, and these functions its aims too.

  1. Preservation functions: In this class included those functions that mental hygiene performs for the development of mental health of the people; such as a balanced diet, regular daily routine, opportunities for free expression, coordination and balance in feelings, desires, and aspirations, assistance in recognizing the innate faculties and awakening of self-confidence.
  2. Preventive Functions: In this class are included those functions which it performs for the prevention of mental illness; such as improvement in the family environment and school environment.
  3. Curative Function: In this class are included those functions that it does to cure mental illness; for example diagnosis of aliments, use of different methods for treating different ailments, improvement in the condition of a mental hospital, etc.

Performance of the above three functions is the aims, utility, and importance of mental hygiene.
