Role of School in Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development

The term school refers to the place where efforts are made for developing a child. A child should have great devotion in his school. Every school has three types of environment which influence the child—(i) Physical environment (ii) Social environment and Psychological and Educational environment.

According to John Dewey, the school has a unique environment where the innate qualities of the child are developed for life and functioning efficiently in occupation and in society.

The following are the main characteristics of a school:

(i) The school is the name of a specific environment.

(ii) The school activities are organized to develop the children.

(iii) The school is the centre of a child’s development.

(i) It is meant for solving the complexities of society.

(ii) The cultural and social values are developed in the school.

(iii) The purpose of school is to bring the all-around development of a child. It has a development-oriented environment.

(iv) The school is the link between home and society.

(v) The objectives of the school are to develop the cognitive affective and psychomotor aspects of a child.

Means to Make School Environment Effective

The school is the second place for developing good qualities in a child. The school organization and school health are the main aspects of school aspects which have been discussed elsewhere in detail. Now, there is a great change in family and home environment. We do not live in a joint family, the mother and father are in a job, and there is a shift towards the single-family i.e., parents and children. Now the family or home is not sharing its responsibilities. The school has to share created the most appropriate physical, social, cultural and psychological environment in school.

(i) The school should be outside the locality in open and clean physical surroundings.

(ii) The school plant and buildings should be open and airy.

(iii) There should be adequate furniture, equipment, a reading room, library, laboratory, playground, etc.

(iv) All these facilities constitute the school environment.

(v) There should be green plants and gardens, etc.

(vii) The main emphasis should be given to academic activities. The culture activities, assembly programmed seminar, and group discussion should be organized.

Role of Community

The group of people of a place has the same objectives which are realized through cooperative life, It is difficult to plan without cooperative life. It is the second place after home for his socialization. It develops our feeling of ours. It has no place for I or me. The members of the community should have we feeling sympathy and cooperation with each other. It is a well-organized aspect but it is not a society. The feeling of locality is developed by the community.

The community refers to a general living group which has a common objective It maintains all types of relations. It is the result that members of the community do not have a specific goal and selfish motive. It is concerned with the intensive social life in which human beings are there. They are conscious enough about social objectives and motives. Thus community lives generate a government for the socialization of a child:

(i) community life creates an appropriate social environment which contributes to social and cultural development. It develops emotions, sentiments, and characters as per the norms of society. Community life creates an appropriate social environment.

(ii) It also develops a cultural environment for the values of life and ways of

expressing his emotions. It develops the conduct and values of life.

(iii) The educative process and activities are controlled and organized by

the community to meet the local requirements. The educational programmes and curriculums are designed in view of the future requirements of the community. The educational process is made more meaningful and purposive.

(iv) The community organizes informal activities and programmers for facilitating the child for his study by establishing libraries, reading rooms, museums and playgrounds, etc.

(v) The community education includes the following affective elements:

  • The community is a small unit of a society, therefore it contributes to socialization.
  • Culture means what we follow in our daily life. The community also provides informal educational situations for developing culture and our values. The cultural factor influences the community.
  • The community of today is mainly influenced by politics. It also affects our school functioning. Today’s education is purely educational politics. The political consciousness is provided by the community
  • Community development is mainly based on financial conditions and economic factors. The community should provide some training to the children for their vocations so that they are able to earn their livings.
