Meaning and Definition of Social Intelligence

Generally, social intelligence is understood as the ability with the help of which an individual conducts himself with others skillfully. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Social Intelligence Study Material Notes)

When other people are impressed by an individual’s behavior, it is then said that a particular individual is skilled socially. However, in the viewpoint of psychologists mean the ability to an environment effectively.

These facts have been presented by different psychologists in different ways:

According to Ross Honeybill:

Social intelligence is an aggregated measure of self and social awareness evolved social beliefs and attitudes, and a capacity and appetite to manage complex social change.

According to Edward Thorndike:

Social intelligence is the ability to understand and manage men and women, boys and girls to act wisely in human relations.

It becomes abundantly clear from the above definitions that social intelligence is nothing but interpersonal intelligence, a type of intelligence as enunciated by Gardener, and it is nothing but interpersonal intelligence, a type of intelligence as enunciated by the tact that social intelligence is more related to the ability to deal with another individual, society or his environment, and less with himself.

The criterion of this type of intelligence is success in only a social environment. Social intelligence comprises awareness of social dynamics and circumstances, techniques to interact with them, and the behavior undertaken to achieve his goals through them. In some measure, it also comprises techniques for the perception of the self.

On the basis of the above explanation, social intelligence can be defined in the simple form as follows:

Social intelligence is the ability by which an individual understands diverse social circumstances and conducts himself in these circumstances to the realization of his objective skillfully.

To understand the influence of  social intelligence in one’s life, it would be necessary to understand Karl Albrecht’s theory of the effect of social intelligence, which is as follows:

Theory of Effect of Social Intelligence

The psychologist Karl Albrecht has laid down the theory of level determination on the basis of the effect caused due to the application of social intelligence. According to this theory, an individual with others deals using his social intelligence: and it affects somewhere between two opposite extremes. Albrecht has described these two opposite effects as toxic effects and nourishing effects. The toxic effect compels an individual to think of himself as valueless, rueful, desperate, and guilty. On the contrary, the nourishing effect makes an individual consider himself valuable, honorable, resolute, motivated, and capable. An individual conducting himself in continuous toxic effect possesses social intelligence of the lowest kind. Such types of individuals are not able to form relations with others, nor can they influence others. Others wish to keep their distance from them.

Those who have a nourishing effect continuously attain skills in influencing and impressing others. All people respect them and try to emulate them. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Social Intelligence Study Material Notes)

Such people have the highest extent of social intelligence. Generally, an individual has his level of social intelligence between these two extremes. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Social Intelligence Study Material Notes)

Social Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence

Some psychologists accept social intelligence as part of emotional intelligence; however, if we look deeply, we find that both social intelligence and emotional intelligence have different types of functions so far as an individual’s conduct skillfulness is concerned. Social intelligence is a distinct form, but its functions as complementary to emotional intelligence.

Both types of models are needed in order to understand oneself and interact with another individual. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Social Intelligence Study Material Notes)

Deficiency in social intelligence is due to insufficient development of emotional intelligence. Deficiency in social intelligence makes an individual receive unsuccessful social experiences because he commits mistakes in thinking about his own abilities. These abilities pertain to emotional intelligence. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Social Intelligence Study Material Notes

Social Intelligence Profile (SIP)

Social intelligence profile (SIP) is a tool to explain social intelligence. This has been profiled explains social intelligence in three ways. Tile’s first two types of explanation evaluate an individual’s abilities to conduct himself effectively with others, and the third type explains the manners in which an individual interacts with others.

SIP lists different types of behaviors. According to this profile, the social behavior of an individual is classified into five fundamental skills, which are:

  1. Situational Awareness: When an individual is in a certain type of situation, his observation of different types of contexts in it, his understanding of it, and his ability how that situation can influence his behavior, is called situational awareness.
  2. Presence: The impression or indication that others form on looking at or observing his repeated behaviors is called presence.
  3. Authenticity: An individual forms an opinion about another after perceiving his firmness towards honesty and morality, this is called authenticity. (BEd 2nd Year What do you mean by Social Intelligence Study Material Notes)

  5. Empathy: This is that skill by which an individual forms cordial relations with others: this is that capability and ability by which other people respect him, like to intermingle with him, like to intermingle with him, and get ready to cooperate with him.

The second important part of SIP is self-insight. In this, it presents a series of profile adjectives and attributes. Each pair contains two opposite attributes, such as cold-hot, defined-brief, positive-negative, etc. These two opposite attributes can be evaluated on a five-point rating scale to evaluate an individual. The third part of SIP presents an explanation of the methodologies by which an individual interacts with others.
